The auto-entrepreneur status attracts many freelancers and small traders in Morocco. A very practical question remains: what should the invoice look like? Here is a practical guide, with the points to verify with the administration because the rules change.
When is an invoice needed?
As soon as a business customer pays you, they will almost always ask for an invoice for their books. For a private customer, an invoice or a simple receipt, depending on custom, is still good practice: it proves the transaction and protects both parties.
What to include
- Your full name or the name of your activity, and your address.
- Your auto-entrepreneur number and your ICE if you have one.
- The customer's name, address and ICE if it is a business.
- A unique invoice number and the date.
- The description of the service or product, the quantity and the price.
- The total amount, the terms and the payment method.
And VAT?
It depends on your regime and activity. If you are not subject to VAT, do not add it: choose 0% in the tool and, if needed, add a note. If you are subject to it, show the applicable rate. When in doubt, ask the tax administration or an accountant before issuing your first invoice.
Numbering and filing
A simple format is enough: AE-2026-001, AE-2026-002... Keep a copy of every invoice and every payment received. Our guide on organizing business documents describes a filing system that lasts.
Common mistakes
- Invoicing without a number, or with repeated numbers.
- Forgetting the business customer's ICE.
- Adding VAT when you are not subject to it.
- Not keeping copies of issued invoices.
An example auto-entrepreneur invoice
Take Salma, a self-employed photographer, invoicing a photo shoot to a shop. Her invoice shows her name, her activity, her identifiers as they appear on her card or certificate, the shop's name, a number (FAC-2026-001), the date, the description ("Product photo session, 25 retouched images"), the price and the payment method. Depending on her regime she shows VAT or not; she checks that point with the administration rather than guessing.
How to organize your records
- One folder per year with issued invoices, proof of payment and accepted quotes.
- A tracking sheet: number, customer, date, amount, status (sent, paid, overdue).
- A backup: copy your PDFs to a second device or online storage.
- A reminder the day after the due date for unpaid invoices: a polite message, then a call.
From quote to payment
A simple path limits disputes: an accepted estimate, the work, the invoice with number and due date, then a receipt once payment arrives. Each document refers to the previous one, which keeps the file clear for you and your customer.
The rules for auto-entrepreneurs (ceilings, mandatory details, VAT, filing obligations) are specific to this status and change over time. This guide does not replace them: check the current situation with the administration or a professional.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a free online template?
Yes, as long as it includes the details above. Our Moroccan invoice generator lets you enter your ICE, your number and a 0% VAT rate.
Do I have to show the amount in words?
It is not always required, but it is a common practice with institutional customers.
